Are you aware of environmentally hazardous risks in your workplace?

Did you know that the total energy consumption of idle electronics is equivalent to the annual output of eighteen typical power plants? Or that the use of air conditioning units could cause severe respiratory illnesses?

Factors that contribute to major environmental issues faced in Australia do not just happen at large manufacturing plants or heavy-duty work sites. As a whole, the environmental threats a business is exposed to play a part in the health and wellbeing of individuals in the workplace. Here are some factors that may impact negatively on the workplace:

Air Quality

Sealed office buildings that do not employ proper air circulatory systems can end up spreading allergens, viruses, gases and other microbes; potentially transmitting infectious contagions or introducing biological pollutants into the environment that direly affect the health of employees.

Noise

Noise pollution can create a highly stressful work environment. It can lead to headaches, and in severe cases migraines, heart disease, and hearing loss after long and repeated exposure. This could result in work quality to suffer. Air conditioning units also add to noise pollution.

Ergonomics

Insufficient or uncomfortable working conditions can create major dilemmas for employees. Sitting for prolonged periods of time could lead to fatigue, eye strain, and chronic back pain which can overall affect the decision making abilities of the individual. It has been encouraged that workplaces employ the use of sit-stand desks to prevent the development of musculoskeletal disorders.

The above environmental factors, even in the smallest of workplaces can affect employees and quality of work. It is important to be cautious of what activities are carried out in the workplace in order to minimise or prevent the onset of health issues that could increase unproductiveness.
