The Challenge

Inmarsat Australia sought to develop and implement a Safety Management System that complies with AS/NZS 4801:2001 and OHSAS 18001:2007 in preparation for a certification audit. Though procedures existed, these procedures were not specific to Inmarsat Australia’s current operations and thereby certification would have been difficult.

The challenge that Compliance Council faced was the requirement to work with an existing document management system (Confluence and JIRA). This required the project team to adapt their existing approach to allow for the time required to understand Confluence and JIRA, and modify the procedures to best utilise the software.

Our Solution

As Compliance Council had not previously dealt with Confluence and JIRA, it was an interesting experience adapting the Safety Management System. Compliance Council recommended the Eight Week Process as a result and delivered a Safety Management System that was completely paperless.

The Results

Inmarsat Australia kicked off the project with Compliance Council in early November 2015 with the implementation of a Safety Management System. With the inclusion of the holiday season, the project was completed over twelve weeks and finalised by early February, 2016. Since certification, Inmarsat Australia and its workers have been more mindful and encouraged to perform safe work practices in the workplace.
